Sacred Heart of Jesus Catholic Church

In June, 1973, fifteen faithful Catholics attended the first Mass in Hot Springs Village at the fire station on Calella Road. The celebrant was Father Bernard Malone, the current pastor. This led to Thursday evening services at the Village Methodist Church, conducted by Fr. Reynolds, the Pastor of St. Mary's Church in Hot Springs. In 1978 the growing number of Catholics formed an association called the Village Catholics.

In 1979 these Catholics petitioned Bishop Andrew J. MacDonald for permission to build a Catholic church in the Village. This permission was granted and, after raising sufficient funds, the parishioners broke ground for the church in July 1981. It was dedicated by Bishop McDonald on May 11, 1982.

The name of the parish, Sacred Heart of Jesus, was chosen by Fr. Robert C. Kepple, a priest stationed in Hot Springs, who celebrated mass on weekends at the Coronado Center from 1979 until the new church was built. Fr. Kepple continued celebrating mass at the new church until 1986, when he was transferred to other duties in the Diocese. Bishop McDonald assigned Fr. Frank Draude to minister to the parishioners at Sacred Heart, and he was periodically assisted by newly ordained Fr. Alan Rosenau. By 1986 the number of parishioners had grown to 650 and three masses were required to serve them.

In 1993 Bishop MacDonald established Sacred Heart as a canonical parish and appointed Father Riedmuller as pastor of Sacred Heart in addition to his duties as pastor of St. Mary's in Hot Springs.  Fr. Draude was appointed Associate Pastor. Also in 1993, ground was broken for the present church, and, in October 1994, the new church was dedicated with a seating capacity of approximately 800.

In 1996 Msgr. Riedmuller was transferred and Fr. Raymond Rossi was assigned as pastor. At the same time, Fr. Draude retired and Fr. Rosenau was assigned to other duties in the diocese.

In 2002 Fr. Rossi retired and Msgr. Bernard Malone was assigned to Sacred Heart as its new pastor. He is currently assisted in his duties by Deacons Bernie Bauer, Bill Friedman, Wally Gieringer, and Larry Lipsmeyer. Also, Fr. Victor Bieberle, a retired priest from the Wichita Kansas Diocese, fills in from time to time.

In June, 2007, the Administration and Education Building was added to the church as well as a new rectory and a cemetery.

As of April, 2008, there were 814 households and 1344 parishioners in the Sacred Heart of Jesus Parish in Hot Springs Village, and we pray that, with God's will, it will continue to grow as a Catholic community.

In June, 2010 Monsignor Malone retired from active pastoral duties, and Father William Elser was appointed as his replacement by Bishop Taylor.
